The present day electricity sector is undergoing major transformation through adopting smart grid concepts from generation till consumer end. It is witnessing increased share of renewables, storage, EV charging stations, microgrids, power electronic interface, intelligent sensors and controllers, automation, and smart metering at different levels in the network. This will lead to active distribution network requiring Advance Distribution Management (ADMS) tools. The large penetration of renewables, being intermittent in nature, will pose system stability, and power quality concerns, which will require proper compensation and controls. The operation, control and protection philosophy of emerging smart grid will pose several R&D and operational challenges.
In India Ministry of Power had funded about 12 Smart Grid pilot projects, being monitored by National Smart Grid Mission- Project Management Unit. Worldwide also, there have been several deployments of smart grid projects recently.
Under the Indo-U.S. Joint Clean Energy Research and Development Center (JCERDC) agreement, Department of Science & Technology (DST), through Indo-U.S. Science and Technology Forum (IUSSTF) in India, and Department of Energy (DOE) from US has funded UI-ASSIST project on ‘Smart Grids and Energy Storage’, having 15 consortia organizations from each country. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur is leading Indian consortia involving 5 IITs, TERI, NTPC NETRA, Utilities and Industries, whereas the consortia from US is being led by Washington State University (WSU), Pullman, WA including MIT, TAMU, two DOE labs, industries and utilities . Apart from R&D activities, this project aims at setting up several lab level pilots and ten (10) field demonstration microgrid pilots covering rural, semi-urban and urban settings.
